I can certainly relate to what you said about convincing yourself about writing happy fics. I came across that road myself. I'm not satisfied with my own writing that I had revised Whisper 3 times and it's a fic that has currently over 126,000 words. I put it on hold for the time being because I have so much going on with my life at the mement that I can't fully concentrate on it like I'd like to.
It's okay to write about the darker side of life. I have many times in the past. Although Whisper is my offical fanfiction, I have written others and I never had the guts to upload any of them until now.
I tend to have a very cheesey sense of humor that just doesn't make any sense at times, therefore, I refrain from using it often. XD
